Neither Irene or I had been here before so we were excited to take the complimentary Oceania excursion that featured the highlights of Marseille. There is a gorgeous church at the highest point in Marseille, the Notre Dame de la Garde. We were taken on a scenic drive along the coast, with the views dominated by impressive cliffs of the Marseille massif and the islands lying just offshore. One of these — the Chateau de If — was the prison of the Count of Monte Cristo, from Dumas’s novel.
The old port of Marseille was delightful. There are still fishermen at this port selling their wares daily. Dinner tonight in one of the specialty restaurants- Jacques- a French bistro inspired by the legendary, Jacques Pepin, Executive Culinary Director of the Oceania fleet. It wasn’t anything less than what we expected—superb!
